Hare Moong Ka Cheela and Tag Award

Hello friends,

Another weekend, another Saturday and last night I was like ok, what do I prepare for Saturday breakfast, as I usually try to do something special, i mean prepare a breakfast, instead of usual waffles, pancakes, toasts, cereal with milk etc. :)

As it had been a while, I soaked green moong and thought of making moong dal cheela in the morning. Here is my recipe the way we do in our family :)

Hare Moong Ka Cheela - हरे मूंग का चीला (Green Gram Lentils' Pancake)

Hara Moong (Green Gram Dal) - 1 cup (washed and soaked in water overnight)
Onion - 1 cup (finely chopped) - adjust it as per your liking
Hari Mirch (Green Chillies) - 3-4 - adjust it as per your liking
Adrakh (Ginger) - 1 inch piece
Lahsan (Garlic) - 2-3 cloves
Lal Mirch (Red Chilli) Powder - 1 tsp
Haldi (Turmeric Powder) - 1 tsp
Salt - as per taste
Jeera(Cumin Seeds) - 1 tsp
Dhaniya Patti (Cilantro) - 1/2 cup (finely chopped)

  • Grind together: soaked hara moong, adrakh, lahsan, hari mirch and jeera (if you prefer leave hari mirch to be added later and not grind it)
  • Do not make the paste too runny, it should be around idli batter consistency.
  • Add the remaining ingredients mentioned above in the ground paste.
  • Heat the tawa and add little oil.
  • Take a big spoonful of batter and spread it on the tawa to the desired sized circle (it usually doesn't come as a perfect circle, due to all the chunky ingredients in it)
  • Pour little oil/butter on the sides and on top of the cheels and cook it till both sides are nicely browned.

In my house, we usually eat it with dahi (yogurt, in Rajasthan, pretty much everything is eating with dahi on the side) or some hot and sour chutney. 1 cup of soaked dal, made 5 cheela of the size shown in the picture and so it was perfect for my husband, my son (5 yr. old) and I. Believe me, they are heavy, so you cannot really eat more than 2, we were struggling even with 2... lol. My husband was later sad that I only soaked 1 cup and now there was no more left to be eaten the next day or later in the day. So, that is how much this is loved in our household.

And, here is one of my favorite picture. It was really difficult to choose this as I have so many favorites and I did not want to overwhelm everyone with hundreds of pictures. This was taken about 1.5 years ago  during our trip to India. This is one of the famous tourist places in and around Jaipur. It is called "Jal Mahal".

Hi Priya, delicious recipe. We make cheela's with besan but moong daal one should be delicious. Will definitely make it!

Hi,Can u please tell do we have to use whole green moong dal or split green moong dal for this recipe.

Hi Rati,

Thanks for your interest in this recipe. It doesnt have to be green moong strictly, but green moong holds the batter fimrly and gets slightly crispy texture. Yellow split moong will be ok too, when neeeded. Give it a try and let me know how it comes out :)
